L’imparfait est un temps du passé. Il permet principalement de décrire une situation dans le passé, de parler d’une habitude ou de décrire une action en cours dans le passé.
La formation
Les terminaisons sont toujours les mêmes :
- je → -ais
- tu → -ais
- il / elle → -ait
- nous → -ions
- vous → -iez
- ils / elles → -aient

Nous parlons → parl-

Quand utiliser l’imparfait ?
- décrire une situation ou un décor dans le passé ;
- parler d’une habitude ou d’une action répétée ;
- décrire une action en cours à un moment du passé.
Le jardin était grand et les arbres étaient très hauts.
Quand j’étais petit, je jouais souvent au football.
Je regardais la télévision quand le téléphone a sonné.
Les cas particuliers
Les verbes en -cer
Avec les verbes en -cer, on met une cédille sous le c devant a pour conserver le son [s].
commencer → nous commençons → je commençais
Les verbes en -ger
Avec les verbes en -ger, on conserve le e devant a pour garder le son [ʒ].
manger → nous mangeons → je mangeais
Les verbes en -ier
Avec certains verbes en -ier, on obtient trois voyelles qui se suivent avec nous et vous.
étudier → nous étudiions vous étudiiez
Les verbes pronominaux
Avec un verbe pronominal, le pronom reste devant le verbe.
se lever → je me levais
se laver → je me lavais
Le verbe être est particulier : son radical à l’imparfait est ét-.

Imparfait ou passé composé ?
L’imparfait sert à décrire une situation, une habitude ou une action en cours.
Le passé composé sert à raconter une action terminée ou un événement précis.
Quand j’étais petit, je jouais souvent dans le jardin. Un jour, je suis tombé et je me suis fait mal.
jouais → habitude
suis tombé → événement précis
L’imparfait sert principalement à décrire le passé, à parler d’une habitude ou à décrire une action en cours.
Formation :
verbe avec « nous » au présent − -ons + terminaison de l’imparfait.
