L'imparfait de l'indicatif est un temps du passé. Il sert à décrire une action habituelle, une situation qui dure ou à raconter des faits en cours dans le passé.
Les verbes du 1er groupe se terminent par -er à l'infinitif. À l'imparfait, ils sont réguliers et se conjuguent tous sur le même modèle, à partir de la forme nous du présent de l'indicatif.
Les verbes du 1er groupe (-er) suivent tous le même modèle à l'imparfait avec le verbe chanter :
je chantais
tu chantais
il / elle chantait
nous chantions
vous chantiez
ils / elles chantaient
Pour conjuguer un verbe du 1er groupe à l’imparfait, prends la forme nous du présent de l’indicatif et enlève -ons.
Ajoute ensuite les terminaisons : -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
Exemple avec parler :
nous parlons → parl-
je parlais
tu parlais
il / elle parlait
nous parlions
vous parliez
ils / elles parlaient
À l'imparfait, la plupart des verbes du 1er groupe conservent leur orthographe habituelle. Certaines particularités présentes au présent subsistent :
commencer → je commençais, nous commencions
manger → je mangeais, nous mangions
balayer → je balayais
payer → je payais
nettoyer → je nettoyais
Le e de manger est conservé pour garder le son [ʒ] : je mangeais, nous mangions.
Le ç de commencer est conservé devant a : je commençais, mais disparaît devant i : nous commencions.

The imperfect tense of the indicative is a past tense. It is used to describe habitual actions, ongoing situations, or background actions in the past.
1st group verbs end in -er in the infinitive. In the imperfect tense, they are regular and all follow the same pattern, based on the nous form of the present tense.
1st group verbs (-er) all follow the same pattern in the imperfect tense using the verb chanter:
je chantais (I was singing / I sang)
tu chantais (you were singing / you sang)
il / elle chantait (he / she was singing / sang)
nous chantions (we were singing / sang)
vous chantiez (you were singing / sang)
ils / elles chantaient (they were singing / sang)
To conjugate a 1st group verb in the imperfect tense, take the nous form of the present tense and remove -ons.
Then add the endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
Example with parler:
nous parlons → parl-
je parlais (I was speaking / I spoke)
tu parlais (you were speaking / you spoke)

At the imperfect tense, most 1st group verbs keep their regular spelling. Some present tense spelling changes still apply:
commencer → je commençais (I was starting / I started), nous commencions (we were starting / we started)
manger → je mangeais (I was eating / I ate), nous mangions (we were eating / we ate)
balayer → je balayais (I was sweeping / I swept)
payer → je payais (I was paying / I paid)
nettoyer → je nettoyais (I was cleaning / I cleaned)
The letter e in manger is kept to preserve the /ʒ/ sound: je mangeais, nous mangions.
The ç in commencer is kept before a: je commençais, but disappears before i: nous commencions.
